Course Descriptions

EDU 5620. Foundations of Special Education (3 hrs).. Overview of the field of Special Education including historical perspectives, programs, and legal provisions.
Practicum: Mild Disabilities (K-6) (2 hrs)

EDU 5660. Instructional Management (3 hrs).
Designed to develop the instructional and behavioral management competencies required to teach students with mild disabilities.   
Prerequisite: EDU 5620.

EDU 5640. Instructional Strategies for Mild Disabilities (K-6) (3 hrs). Deals with pragmatic knowledge about methodologies, techniques and technology related specifically for instruction of K-6th grade students with mild disabilities.
Prerequisites: EDU 5660 and EDU 5620.
Co-requisite: EDU 5690 - Practicum: Mild Disabilities (K-6) (2 hrs).

EDU 5690. Practicum: Mild Disabilities (2 hrs).
Supervised assessment and teaching experience in special education.
Co-requisites:  EDU 5640 - Instructional Strategies for Mild Disabilities (K-6)

EDU 5670. Behavioral Management for Students with Disabilities (3 hrs).
Designed to develop behavioral management competencies required to conduct functional behavioral analysis and the application of behavioral analytic strategies for students with special needs.
Co-requisite: EDU 5692 - Practicum: Mild Disabilities (BD)  (2 hrs).

EDU 5691. Practicum: Mild Disabilities (2 hrs).
Supervised assessment and teaching experience in special education.
Co-requisite:  EDU 5650 - Instructional Strategies for Mild Disabilities (7-12)

EDU 5630. Communication/Collaboration for Exceptional Children (3 hrs).
Designed to introduce the skills necessary to work effectively as a professional member of a multidisciplinary team. Skill orientation and development will emphasize the social concept, communication and collaboration skills, and team building skills necessary for special educators.
Prerequisites: EDU 5620.

EDU 5650. Post-Secondary Transition and Instructional Strategies for Mild Disabilities
(7-12)(3 hrs).
Deals with pragmatic knowledge about competencies in vocational and transitional programming, methodologies, techniques and technology related specifically for instruction of 7-12th grade students with mild disabilities.
Prerequisite: EDU 5640.
Co-requisite: EDU 5691 - Practicum: Mild Disabilities (7-12) (2 hrs)

EDU 5692. Practicum: Mild Disabilities (2 hrs).
Supervised assessment and teaching experience in special education.
Co-requisite: EDU 5670 - Behavior Management for Students with Disabilities

EDU 5680. Assessment for Decision Making (3 hrs.).
Collection and use of educational data to assess and teach students with diverse learning needs. Educational planning, material adaptation, and curriculum development also addressed.
Prerequisite: EDU 5640 or 5650.
Co-requisite: EDU 5690 - Practicum: Mild Disabilities (2 hrs)

EDU 5720 Research in Action for Special Education (3 hrs).
Designed to assist Special Educators to be both good consumers of research and to apply action research methodologies as aids in decision making.
Prerequisite: EDU 5680
