Take Back the Night
Take Back the Night is an international event with the aim of helping survivors of rape and incest feel a sense of hope and care with women from all walks of life who are survivors. This event starts on the Belmont campus at the Tower with a march to Vanderbilt University's campus for a candle light event of speakers and open mike. Women tell their stories of horror and hope and learn from each other the power of solidarity.
The Social Work Club has participated in this event for many
years. We march as one with our sisters in the hope of ending
violence toward women.
Hunger and Homeless Week
Along with the School of Religion, the Social Work Club has spearheaded the effort on campus to make the college community aware of the needs of our neighbors who are hungry and are homeless. The week's activities include lectures and films across campus on the political and economic conditions that keep people from enjoying a life without hunger. The culmination of the week's events include a 'Hunger Banquet' and 'Shantyville' in which groups on campus make a shelter out of cardboard and duct tape and then spend the night in these shelters.
Social Work Day on the Hill
Social Work Day on the Hill is an annual event that is sponsored by the National Association of Social Workers. Practitioners, educators and students from all over the state come together at Legislative Plaza to discuss the policy responses to the issues that impact our profession and the clients we serve. In addition to presenting knowledgeable speakers and legislators, the event serves as a call to action and is a unifying experience that links the practice community to social welfare policy.
