Belmont University Flute Studio
Comprised of diverse and talented players from throughout the United States, the Belmont flute studio atmosphere successfully integrates high-quality performance within a positive learning environment, producing independent and well-rounded musicians. In addition to the study and performance of solo repertoire, students study harmonics, multiple tonguing, scales and etudes. Additional lessons may be taken for credit in the extensive study of orchestral excerpts, 20th - century techniques, the detailed pedagogical works of Marcel Moyse, and/or piccolo.
Undergraduate flute students typically pursue a Bachelor of
Music degree in performance or music education, but Bachelor of
Music degrees are also available in church music, composition,
musical theater, and music theory. Graduate flute students
typically pursue a Master of Music degree in performance or
pedagogy, but Master of Music degrees are also available in music
education, church music, and composition. [

There are numerous performance opportunities for flute students within Belmont's School of Music, including performing with the university Flute Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Belmont Jazz Ensemble, and Athletic Pep Bands. There are also many smaller groups in which to perform: wind duos, trios, quartets, quintets, and instrumentally varied jazz combos.
Students are given the opportunity to perform solo and chamber music in Woodwind Seminar headed by Dr. Daniel Lochrie, a forum that brings all of Belmont's classical woodwind majors together and fosters preparation for the sophomore technical jury, degree recitals and other performance situations. In addition to weekly instruction and frequent performances by Belmont faculty, students also attend concerts and master classes given by guest artists on Belmont's beautiful Nashville campus.
Besides the many on campus performances, flute students may enjoy many off-campus performance opportunities based on their talent and interest. Freelancing activities for flutists are readily available throughout the Nashville area. In addition to performing at numerous church-related events, students are often invited to be regular members of musical groups and events in the area, or are often called upon to substitute for a regular player in these groups.
