International Exchange Program

With our International Exchange program, students in the School of Music can spend up to two semesters at any of the following schools: Russian Academy of Music (Gnesins School) in Moscow; Hochschule fur Musik in Dresden, Germany; Conservatoire d'Angers in Angers, France; and Il Conservatorio di Fiesole and Istituto Italiano, both in Florence, Italy. School of Music students are given an extraordinary opportunities to study in a normally competitively-limited audition atmosphere. Because this program entrusts high responsibilities of the students, we require at least a 3.0 grade average, junior academic standing and evidence of the individual possessing the ability to live abroad.

Dresden In addition, all of the schools are language intensive. Consequently, applicants must have completed at least one year of college-level language (specific to their particular exchange country) and must continue language study during the year abroad. Students will spend approximately one month of intensive language study at the appropriate level in-country prior to beginning music studies.

The School of Music participates in three programs for international study: a year-long or semester-long music exchange and a four-week summer program - typically in May. During the programs (which may include applied study, academic courses, ensemble participation and recitals) students gain an enhanced understanding of international culture and stronger language skills in addition to excellent music training. A basic knowledge of the particular language is necessary to participate in the exchange program. Credit gained through these programs varies, depending on the international program undertaken by the student and the length of the study abroad. The summer program offers six hours of credit in international studies and includes students in other disciplines in addition to music with travel to Dresden, Prague, Moscow and St. Petersburg. Financial aid is available for all of these programs.
