Darren Lowry
I am a freshman at Belmont, majoring in journalism. I would
like to specialize in the area of sports writing and
reporting.
I have had the chance to take several classes from professors who head their various departments. This is an opportunity I am positive I would not get at a larger university, and I am grateful for it. It is obvious to me how Belmont is dedicated to bringing in people who not only are very knowledgeable in their area of expertise, but who also love to share their knowledge with their students.
I have had nothing but positive experiences with the New Century Journalism Program. It is led by a great group of professors including Thom Storey, Sybril Bennett, Pam Parry, and Patrick Connolly that have all challenged me first and foremost to become a better writer.
My family and I decided on Belmont when we saw that the school was committed to building up its journalism program. It has been completely re-designed from top to bottom to reflect the changes in today?s media. The department?s goal is to develop journalists who are not merely fit to work in one form of media, but in all forms of media. The speaker?s series in particular has been a wonderful learning experience. It has featured several cutting-edge journalists from a variety of fields to help us understand how we can become better prepared for the real world.
