Message from the program director
Letter from the Executive Director of the New Century Journalism Program Sybril Bennett, Ph.D.
If you're considering a career as a journalist, then you definitely need to know what Belmont University has to offer. The New Century Journalism Program was created to meet your needs. In this digital age, you may be expected to shoot still and moving video, edit, write and publish a story. Like print journalists in the war with Iraq, you may have to stop typing and grab a microphone or cell phone to tell and transmit the story visually. After that, you could also be expected to translate that same copy into a story for the Internet. When it's all said and done, you will have produced news for broadcast, print, and online media. The catch is that you need the skills in order to perform those duties.
The New Century Journalism Program is a competitive honors program for committed students. If you're working on your school paper/Web site, producing your church newsletter or reporting via broadcast, print or online media, this opportunity should be of interest to you. It will not only teach you how to be competent in the journalism profession, it will also expose you to state of the art technology used in the news gathering process. You will also receive legal, ethical and moral training to become a journalist of integrity.
Finally, and this is one of the best parts of our program, you will meet local, national, and possibly even international journalists, on a regular basis, who are actively working in their respective media. Our faculty are active journalists producing news for local and national media outlets, so you won't have to worry about receiving outdated information.
You will be a journalist PREPARED FOR ANY DIRECTION IN N.E.W.S: New Media, Ethics, Writing and Storytelling. You'll truly be able to go FROM HERE TO ANYWHERE.
