Why Study a Foreign Language?
On a personal level
The study of a foreign language increases understanding of the
interaction between language, culture and thought. Through such
study, students broaden perspective as well as knowledge base,
which allows them read and understand material that would otherwise
be available only in translation. They are thereby personally
enriched.
On a professional level
Competence in a foreign language will enhance career potential, no matter which career a student is planning. Whether it be business, sciences, communications, advertising, banking, teaching, travel/tourism, government service, or overseas employment, knowledge of a foreign language is often the extra selling-point needed to land that perfect job. A major or minor in a foreign language can be combined with any other special study to strengthen the knowledge base and to enrich acareer.
