James Stamper, Ed. D.
My undergraduate degrees in History and English from
Carson-Newman College have been a good background for my work in
higher education, as have my Master's of History and
Doctorate in Educational Curriculum and Instruction from University
of Tennessee-Knoxville. After 4 years of teaching middle school in
Knoxville (TN), my career has been exclusively in higher education.
I have taught adjunct at several universities, including Peabody
College-Vanderbilt, but my full-time service has been to
Carson-Newman College (8 years) and to Belmont University.
In my present assignment, I direct Belmont's student
teaching program and teach in the area of Educational Foundations
and Social Studies Methods. We are fortunate to have talented,
competent students in our teacher education program. I particularly
enjoy getting out into the schools where the student teachers are
taking on the role of educational partners with their mentor
teachers in the K-12 world.
I have chaired 30 visiting committees for the College Commission of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and I serve as a trustee for International College in Naples/Ft. Myers, Florida. Needless to say, I enjoy being immersed in higher education, but there's no place I'd rather be than at Belmont!
