James Stamper

I am pleased to say that I've been at Belmont since 1980, and I've been privileged to serve as academic dean, vice president for academic affairs, and (since 1991) as professor of education.

My undergraduate degrees in History and English from Carson-Newman College have been a good background for my work in higher education, as have my Master's of History and Doctorate in Educational Curriculum and Instruction from University of Tennessee-Knoxville. After 4 years of teaching middle school in Knoxville (TN), my career has been exclusively in higher education. I have taught adjunct at several universities, including Peabody College-Vanderbilt, but my full-time service has been to Carson-Newman College (8 years) and to Belmont University.

In my present assignment, I direct Belmont's student teaching program and teach in the area of Educational Foundations and Social Studies Methods. We are fortunate to have talented, competent students in our teacher education program. I particularly enjoy getting out into the schools where the student teachers are taking on the role of educational partners with their mentor teachers in the K-12 world.

I have chaired 30 visiting committees for the College Commission of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and I serve as a trustee for International College in Naples/Ft. Myers, Florida. Needless to say, I enjoy being immersed in higher education, but there's no place I'd rather be than at Belmont!
