Health Care Courses (HCM)

HCM 640. Ethics: Foundations for Health Care Management (1). This course examines the ethical issues faced in health care management. Ways to develop ethically responsible health care organizations by aligning all systems to support ethics and empowering employees to be ethical in their decision making and behavior are studied.

HCM 641. Health Care and the Law I (2). This course deals with the basic legal compliance elements, legal interpretation and the current and emerging legislation and regulation affecting the health care industry. Relevant cases are examined and studied.

HCM 642. Systems Management in Health Care (2). A study of concepts and methods for management of health care operations. Topics include system thinking, performance indicators, service design, process planning and analysis, quality assessment and improvement, strategies to meet demand, queuing studies, scheduling, supply and inventory management, supervision and productivity improvement. Quantitative models for resource optimization are included.

HCM 643. Strategic Management in Health Care (2). This capstone course focuses on managers' roles and needed skills, and the ability to formulate and implement strategies in the health care industry. Key areas include vision, external and internal analysis, and strategy formulation.

HCM 644. Public Policy Issues in Health Care (2). This course reviews the current and emerging public policy issues of health care as the industry prepares for the 21st century. The processes of formulating, analyzing and influencing public policy and decision making are also examined.

HCM 645. Managed Care (2). This course examines managed care and presents the various models as well as proven strategies and market analysis.
