The Center for Business Ethics has announced its fall Ethics Leadership Speakers Series. This extraordinary group is being brought to Belmont in conjunction with Debate ’08, the Presidential debate to be held at Belmont October 7, 2008.

David Callahan, Bestselling Author of
The Cheating Culture, to Kick off
Belmont’s Center for Business Ethics Fall Speaker Series

An eye-opening look at cheating:
from the classroom to the boardroom to ethics and democracy.

On September 9, 2008, best selling author David Callahan will speak on "The Cheating Culture: Ethics and Democracy." Callahan has had numerous articles published in places like The New York Times, The Washington Post, and USA Today. He has also been a frequent commentator on CNN, CBS, PBS, MSNBC, and Fox News, and has been a regular guest on radio talk shows across the United States, including appearances on the NPR programs Morning Edition, The Connection, and the Tavis Smiley Show. He lectures frequently about issues of ethics and integrity to universities, associations, and businesses.

September 26:   Frist Lecture Hall; Gordon E. Inman Center; 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. John Seigenthaler – In dialogue with John Seigenthaler, Jr., on the topic Ethics and the Presidential Election:  Is the Media Helping or Hurting? Seigenthaler is founder of the First Amendment Center and a former president of the American Society of Newspaper Editors.  He served for 43 years as an award-winning journalist.  John Seigenthaler, Jr. is former NBC news anchor and now Partner and CEO, Seigenthaler Public Relations New York.

October 21:  Maddox Grand Atrium; Curb Center; reception 4:30 p.m.; presentation at 5:00 p.m. Cynthia Cooper will speak on Ethical Dilemmas: Power and Money. She is author of Extraordinary Circumstances: The Journey of a Corporate Whistleblower. Time magazine named Ms. Cooper a 2002 Person of the Year after she and her team identified the corporate fraud at WorldCom, which at that time was the largest corporate fraud in history.  Currently, she speaks to students and professionals, sharing some of the lessons she has learned and emphasizing the importance of strong ethical leadership.

November 6:  Massey Boardroom, fourth floor; Massey Business Center; reception at 4:30 p.m.; speaker at 5:00 p.m. Jonathan Wight will speak on The New Administration and the Economy: What Can We Expect? Wight is Professor of Economics at the University of Richmond and author of the book Saving Adam Smith: A Tale of Wealth, Transformation, and Virtue.  Wight will discuss expectations of a new administration in the White House two days after the election.

Convocation Events Sponsored by the Center for Business Ethics

Convocation events serve as an educational tool toward that end. Speakers and business leaders are brought to campus to address topics of business ethics. Often open to the public, events sponsored by the Center for Business Ethics are regularly attended by students enrolled in  undergraduate, graduate, and executive education programs within the College of Business Administration at Belmont University.
